You Got In! What’s Next for High School Seniors Who Have Been Accepted to College

Congratulations, seniors! 🎉 You’ve done it! You’ve been accepted to college! After years of hard work, long nights of studying, countless applications, and nerve-wracking waiting, now is the time to celebrate your achievements. Be proud of this moment, and take time to recognize everything you’ve accomplished. Getting into college is no small feat, and you should take a moment to truly celebrate.
Now you stand at a momentous crossroads. With multiple acceptances in hand, the question has shifted from “Will they choose me?” to the more nuanced “Which one will I choose?” This reversal of power is both liberating and daunting. You might be juggling offers, trying to compare financial aid packages, or even wondering whether your “yes” schools feel like the right fit. That’s completely normal.
The good news? There are several ways to help guide your decision and ensure the school you choose is the right one for you. Here are some ways to make a thoughtful and confident college choice:
1. Go on Admitted Student Visits
Visiting campus as an admitted student is a completely different experience than a general campus tour. These events are tailored just for you—students who already received a “yes.” You’ll get to meet potential future classmates, explore the dorms, sit in on classes, and really start to imagine your life there. You’re not just touring buildings; you’re studying a community you might join. These visits can help clarify things like: Do I feel comfortable here? Can I see myself thriving? Sometimes that gut feeling matters more than any ranking or statistic.
2. Talk to Alumni and Current Students
No one understands a college better than the people who’ve actually lived it. Reach out to alumni, older friends, or even ask your college admissions rep to connect you with a student ambassador. Their stories reveal the gaps between marketing and experience. Ask about what they loved, what surprised them, and what they wish they had known. Their honest experiences can shed light on the campus culture, academic pressure, social life, and post-grad opportunities.
3. Speak with Department Chairs or Faculty
If you already know what you want to study—or even if you’re deciding between a few interests—take the initiative to talk to someone in those departments. Conversations with professors and academic advisors can reveal in more detail your potential major at that particular college. Beyond course listings, investigate the philosophical approach to your discipline. Does the psychology department emphasize neurological research or humanistic perspectives? Is the engineering program theoretical or application-focused? Professors and academic advisors can also tell you about internships, mentorship, research opportunities, and what makes their department stand out. Don’t be afraid to ask: What support systems are in place for students? Tell me about the hands-on learning opportunities. How much collaboration (or competition) exists between students? These conversations can reveal how well your academic and career goals will be supported.
4. Connect Through Social Media
Follow your colleges on Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms. Search for the Class of 2029 (or your class year!) group chats, follow student organizations that align with your interests, and watch content from current students. Pay attention not just to content but to emotional tone. Social media offers a unique, unfiltered look at daily campus life and student experiences. And don’t underestimate how meaningful it can be to connect with others who are going through the same decision-making process. You might even make your first college friend before setting foot on campus!
