While the application opens annually on August 1, students can only submit their UC application between October 1 and November 30. Admission decisions are released between March 1-30.

The College of Engineering is its most selective major. UC Davis has a vast campus and a commitment to sustainability.

Top majors include Biological Science; Business; Computer Science; Nursing; and Psychology.
4. UC Los Angeles (UCLA) – The Cultural Oasis
UCLA, located in the heart of Los Angeles, offers an unparalleled cultural experience. With world-class arts and entertainment and a diverse urban environment, UCLA is perfect for students who seek the excitement and opportunities of a big city. The school’s most selective majors are Engineering (transferring into the school of engineering is even more challenging than applying as a freshman, so students are discouraged from applying undeclared and then trying to transfer in), Film/TV/Theatre (students can only be accepted to the Film major their junior year; there is no direct admit), Arts and Architecture, Music, and Nursing. New majors include Public Health, Disability Studies, Stats and Data Sciences (previously Stats), and Music Industry (previously Music History and Industry).
5. UC Merced – The Up-and-Coming Gem
UC Merced, the newest addition to the UC system, an emerging star in the academic world, is located in the middle of the state. Its small, tight-knit community, combined with cutting-edge research facilities, is ideal for those who want to leave their mark on a growing campus. The school is offering new majors: Chemical Engineering, Data Science (BA or BS), Environmental Engineering and Public Health. A state-of-the-art Medical Education building is an impressive recent addition to this campus.
6. UC Riverside – The Research Powerhouse
Known for its groundbreaking research in science, UC Riverside is a great choice for students who want to engage in transformative research projects and be part of a vibrant academic community. Located about an hour east of Los Angeles, UCR is ranked No. 2 in the world for research in entomology by the Center for World University Rankings, and No. 31 in the world in plant and animal sciences, according to U.S. News Global Rankings. They’re also home to the largest indoor atmospheric test chamber, and a national leader in air pollution and alternative fuels research. UC Riverside is a Top 12 Public University, according to Forbes, and has been named the nation’s leader among public universities for social mobility by U.S. News for four of the past five years.
7. UC San Diego – The Beach Paradise
UC San Diego is a blend of academic excellence and the joys of coastal living with its world-class research facilities and stunning beaches. Its most selective majors are Bio Science, Data Science, Engineering, and Public Health. (Tip: Students should be sure to select an alternative major on their application that is NOT another selective major.) New majors there include Aerospace Engineering with different specialties and Mathematical Biology.
8. UC San Francisco (UCSF) – The Health Sciences Leader
Not to be confused with USF (University of San Francisco) which is a private university, UCSF is a top-notch institution for those pursuing careers in healthcare and biomedical sciences. Located in the heart of San Francisco, it offers a dynamic urban experience and access to cutting-edge research and medical facilities. Note, however, that USCF does not offer undergraduate degrees.
9. UC Santa Barbara – The Coastal Retreat
Located on the picturesque edge of the Pacific Ocean, UC Santa Barbara is community-driven and globally-focused with a culture of interdisciplinary collaboration. Its strong emphasis on liberal arts and sciences offers a well-rounded education in a stunning setting. As a note, UCSB does NOT admit by major, except for College of Engineering and Creative Studies/audition majors.
10. UC Santa Cruz – The Nature Lover’s Dream
UC Santa Cruz’s unique academic programs and close-knit community make it a welcoming and inspiring place to study. The school focuses on the intersection of innovation, social justice, and sustainability. Their most selective majors include Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science. New Majors include Creative Technologies BA (online); Math and Theory Computation. Their mascot: Sammy the Banana Slug.

Not all majors are open to first year applicants. If a major is unavailable, students should instead explore majors in the same academic college/school or research if that college has a recommended path to the major.
Admissions for the University of California System
1. Academic Excellence
UC schools are synonymous with academic rigor and excellence so these University of California admissions tips will be helpful. To shine in the intense competition for admission, students must achieve stellar grades in high school. Pay meticulous attention to the A-G course requirements, a minimum of 15 courses across seven subject areas that UCs deem essential for admission. These courses encompass English, math, science, history, language other than English, and fine arts, among other vital components. California applicants must earn at least a 3.0 GPA and non-residents must earn a minimum 3.4 GPA in all A-G or college-preparatory courses to be considered for admission.
2. Extracurricular Activities

Admission readers want the student’s voice to shine and for the experiences they write about to be “relevant,” which means recent (in high school). 5. Standardized Tests
Campuses will not consider test scores for California public and independent high school applicants in admissions selection, a practice known as “test-blind” admissions. Test scores, which you can report if you are accepted and plan to enroll, can still be considered for other purposes such as course placement or certain scholarships.
6. Letters of Recommendation
UC schools do not require, nor read, letters of recommendation at the time of application. A campus may request a letter of recommendation as part of a supplemental review, so be sure to check your email frequently.
7. A Comprehensive Application
To err is human, but on this journey, precision is paramount. It’s important to ensure that the application is comprehensive and entirely error-free. Scrutinize academic records, transcripts, and application essays meticulously to avoid mistakes. Meeting all deadlines is the first rule of maintaining eligibility. Note that the application has a 20-minute timer, so the application should be saved at the end of every page to avoid losing work entered.
