University of Florida Admissions 2027: Early Decision, Majors, Deadlines and What Families Need to Know
University of Florida admissions for Fall 2027 come with two major changes: UF now offers Early Decision, and a student’s intended major will be considered as part of the admissions review.
International College Counselors recently attended the State University System of Florida Tour and also received detailed updates from UF’s Fall 2027 admissions webinar for school counselors. Together, these updates gave our team a close look at what’s changing for UF applicants this year.
ICC students also continue to see strong results at UF. For the Fall 2026 entering class, 71 ICC students were admitted to the University of Florida, for a 65% ICC acceptance rate compared with UF’s overall acceptance rate of about 22%.
UF received nearly 96,000 first-year applications for Fall 2026 and expects to enroll about 7,500 students. Strong grades and test scores matter, but the reality is that UF has far more qualified applicants than available spots.
Here’s what students and families need to know about UF admissions for Fall 2027.
1. UF Early Decision Is New for Fall 2027
For the first time, students can apply to UF through binding Early Decision.
UF now offers three application plans:

Materials for Early Decision applicants, including test scores and STARS, are due by October 22, and students admitted ED must commit to UF by January 8.
The biggest thing to understand is simple: Early Decision is a commitment.
A student admitted ED is expected to withdraw applications from other colleges and attend UF. The Common App ED agreement must also be signed by the student, a parent, and the high school counselor.
Students can receive one of three ED decisions:
- Admit: You are expected to enroll.
- Defer: This is a “maybe.” Your application moves into Regular Decision for reconsideration, and you are released from the ED commitment.
- Deny: Your UF application process is over for this year’s cycle.
Should You Apply Early Decision to the University of Florida?
Only if UF is truly your first choice.
A student should be able to say, “UF is my first choice. If I get in, I’m going! Go Gators!”
Families also need to have a clear sense of affordability before applying. UF said ED applicants will receive merit scholarship information with their December decision, but they may not yet have their full need-based financial aid package.

One more note: UF has said it does not have a set percentage of the class it plans to fill through ED. Families should not assume there is a known Early Decision admissions advantage.
2. UF Will Consider Intended Major in Fall 2027 Admissions
This is another important change.
For Fall 2027, UF will consider a student’s intended major as one part of its comprehensive admissions review.
That does not mean UF admits first-year students directly into specific majors. Intended major is simply one factor among many.
Still, students should give the question more thought than they may have in the past.
The major you choose should make sense with the rest of your application. If you say you want to study engineering, for example, UF will likely see whether you have challenged yourself in math and science and how you have explored that interest through robotics, coding, research, engineering projects, or other experiences.
That does not mean every activity needs to match your major. It also does not mean students should choose a major because they think it might be “easier” to get into.
Choose something that genuinely reflects your interests, and make sure the overall story of your application makes sense.
3. How Competitive Is University of Florida Admission?
Nearly 96,000 students applied to UF for Fall 2026, while the university expects a first-year class of roughly 7,500 students.
About 78% of the class is expected to be made up of Florida residents, with the remaining 22% coming from out of state and other countries.
UF’s overall acceptance rate was about 22% for Fall 2026, but that number tells only part of the story.
The takeaway is important: being qualified for UF does not guarantee admission to UF.
UF looks at the full application, including:
- Course rigor
- Grades
- Standardized test scores
- Activities and involvement
- Experiences and accomplishments
- Contributions to school and community
- The context in which a student achieved those things
Strong academics remain essential, but UF is looking at much more than numbers.
What About the UF Waitlist?
UF told counselors that it anticipates using the waitlist again for Fall 2027.
There is never a guarantee that a student will be admitted from the waitlist, but families should know that UF expects the waitlist to be part of this year’s admissions process.
4. UF Admission Pathways: PaCE, Innovation Academy, Promise, UF Online and Going Gator
UF admission can take several forms beyond traditional fall admission to the Gainesville campus.
Here are the major UF pathways families should understand.
PaCE
PaCE, or Pathway to Campus Enrollment, allows selected students to begin their UF degree online and later transition to campus after meeting program requirements.
Students do not apply directly to PaCE. UF may offer it as one of its admission decisions.
Students generally need to complete at least 60 credits, spend at least two semesters in PaCE, and finish required courses for their major before transitioning to the Gainesville campus.
One thing to note: if you want to be eligible for consideration for PaCE, be sure to select a PaCE-eligible major on your application.
Innovation Academy
UF’s Innovation Academy (IA) offers a minor in innovation with a strong focus on entrepreneurship, ethics, and leadership and includes more than 25 majors across seven UF colleges.
IA follows a spring/summer academic calendar, leaving fall open for internships, research, work, study abroad, and other opportunities.
Students who want to be considered for IA should select an eligible IA major and indicate Innovation Academy as a choice on the UF application.
Promise Program
The Promise Program is a UF-selected pathway. Students cannot apply directly to it.
Students begin classes in the summer and receive additional academic and transition support. The program primarily serves Florida residents, including many first-generation and Pell-eligible students.
UF Online
UF Online is different from PaCE.
Students who apply directly to UF Online are choosing a fully online degree program. It is not a temporary pathway to the Gainesville campus.
Before choosing UF Online, make sure the available majors and online format are a good fit.
Going Gator: Guaranteed Admission to UF
Going Gator offers guaranteed admission to UF for eligible students who earn an Associate of Arts degree with at least a 2.5 GPA from Santa Fe College, College of Central Florida, or Florida Gateway College.
Students must meet UF transfer requirements and choose one of 19 eligible majors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
One important note: students admitted through Going Gator cannot change majors after transferring to UF.

5. UF Majors, Honors, Research and Academic Opportunities
There’s a lot to explore academically at UF.
The university reports:
- 16+ colleges
- 120+ majors
- 300+ academic programs
UF also continues to invest heavily in research and artificial intelligence.
The university reported approximately $1.33 billion in research funding, with opportunities for undergraduates to work with faculty, graduate students, research teams, community organizations, and others.
UF is also weaving artificial intelligence into programs across disciplines, not just computer science and engineering. That can be especially appealing to students who want AI skills without necessarily majoring in a traditional technology field.
Students interested in the UF Honors Program should know that UF expects a cohort of roughly 700 students. Honors applicants need to indicate their interest and complete an additional essay in the UF section of the Common Application.
UF Open Houses for Fall 2027 Applicants
UF will host Open Houses on October 12 and October 19, 2026.
If UF is high on your student’s list, especially if they’re considering Early Decision, this is a great chance to get a better feel for the campus, academics, student life, and overall fit.
6. University of Florida Tuition, Financial Aid and Affordability
For Florida families in particular, UF can offer strong value.
UF’s approximate tuition and fee costs are:
- Florida residents: $6,440
- Out-of-state students: $34,620
Once housing, meals, technology, and other expenses are included, UF suggested families plan for approximate annual totals of:
- About $25,000 per year for Florida residents
- About $52,000–$53,000 per year for out-of-state students
These are planning numbers, not individual financial aid estimates, so families should always check UF’s current cost information and use the university’s Net Price Calculator.
UF reports that 82% of its undergraduates graduate debt-free and that the university awarded more than $171 million in grants and scholarships to incoming first-year students.
Merit aid is competitive. UF says about 10% of admitted first-year students receive a merit scholarship.

What Should Fall 2027 UF Applicants Do Now?
Is UF truly your first choice? If so, does binding Early Decision make sense for your family?
What major are you listing, and does it authentically reflect your academic interests?
Would you be happy with one of UF’s alternative admission pathways if that is what you are offered?
And most importantly, does your application give UF a clear sense of who you are beyond your grades and scores?
There is no magic major, application plan, or formula that guarantees admission.
But there is a real advantage to understanding the options before you apply and making choices that fit the student rather than simply checking boxes.
