U.S. News Announces the 2017 Best Colleges Rankings
U.S. News & World Report released its 2017 college rankings. The Best Colleges 2017 list offers rankings and data on more than 1,800 colleges and universities across the U.S.
According to the report, the Best National University once again is Princeton (NJ), followed by Harvard (MA), the University of Chicago (IL) and Yale (CT) tied at third, and Columbia (NY) and Stanford (CA) tied for the fifth spot. For the 14th consecutive year, the Best National Liberal Arts College is Williams College, followed by Amherst College, and Wellesley College, all of which are located in Massachusetts. And the Top Public School spot went to University of California – Berkeley.
Students can also research schools on specifics such as Most International Students, Most Innovative Schools, Historically Black Colleges, A-plus Schools for B Students, Best Business Programs and Best Engineering Programs.
To create the 2017 list, U.S. News used quantitative measures. According to their website, they gathered data from each college on several indicators of academic excellence. Each factor was assigned a weight that reflected the judgment of U.S. News about how much the measure mattered. Then the schools were ranked against the other schools in their category, based on their score. The indicators include graduation and retention rates (22.5 %); undergraduate academic reputation (22.5%); faculty resources (20%); student selectivity (12.5%); financial resources (10%); graduation rate performance (7.5%); and alumni giving rate (5%).
Although a great guide, always note that the college search is not all about getting into the Best College as decided by a survey. The best college for one student is not necessarily the best college for another and families should really look at the “Best Fit College” for your student.
